The Institute for Mathematics Learning (IML) was established by West Virginia University to enhance significantly the teaching and learning of mathematics at West Virginia University, throughout the state of West Virginia, and across the Appalachian Region. The Institute’s long-term goal is to improve the quality of math instruction throughout the state by ensuring that standards are kept high, that secondary schools are aware of collegiate expectations, and that teachers have the tools they need to help students meet those academic standards.

The IML is addressing three underlying components of mathematics learning-curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Change in these components is created by actively engaging students in the exploration and discovery of mathematical concepts. Technology is employed as a tool in this exploration, and real-world problems are used to motivate students to improve problem-solving and critical thinking skills. The IML is conducting research to support the effectiveness of these changes, leading to informed teaching practice.
